Expert Q&A

9. How should buyers test latency without rewarding interruptions?

Trace Margin research deskSection 06Page 12 of 24Last updated

Proposed lead: Kwindla Hultman Kramer, with the buyer’s quality team.

Why it matters: LiveKit’s audio-simulation documentation identifies premature turns, delayed yielding after interruption, overlapping speech, silence and unanswered turns as separate behaviours. A single response-speed figure does not describe all of them. (docs.livekit.io)

Question to put to the expert:

What should an AI voice agent pilot measure when a fast response can also mean interrupting the caller before an address, date or instruction is complete?

A strong answer should cover:

  • A clearly defined measurement start and end—not interchangeable component timings.
  • Median and tail behaviour on the buyer’s actual telephony path.
  • Separate tests for simple replies, system lookups and transaction writes.
  • Pauses within addresses, self-corrections, back-channel speech and genuine interruptions.
  • The relationship between speed, caller effort and correct task completion.

Ask the expert to justify workflow-specific acceptance limits. Do not import one universal millisecond target from a demonstration.

Evidence to request: Timestamped audio and traces, with failed conversations included.

Follow-up: Which configuration is slower but more reliable, and what buyer evidence would justify that trade-off?
