Trace Margin

Hiring signals

How should hiring evidence change the business case?

Use it to identify missing work and ownership—not to reverse-engineer supplier margins. The staffing descriptions above identify tasks to scope. They do not reveal employee utilisation, implementation margins or the amount included in your quote.

Which budget lines should be explicit?

The following is a recommended budgeting structure, not an observed market tariff.

Budget category Work to include Commercial question
Define and prepare Call review, workflow rules, baseline outcomes, system access and risk review Who supplies the rules and resolves conflicting requirements?
Build and launch Configuration, integrations, telephony, test cases, user acceptance and rollout What is included, and what triggers change-control fees?
Run and improve Monitoring, support, regression testing, reporting and controlled changes What recurring work is included in the platform or managed-service charge?
Human exceptions Transfers, callbacks, correction work and repeat contacts Who owns each exception, and how is its cost measured?
Exit and continuity Data export, documentation, access removal, replacement routing and migration Can another team operate or replace the implementation?

Calculate:

Internal labour cost = sum of each role’s allocated time × its actual fully loaded employment cost.

Then add supplier implementation, usage, support, testing tools and human follow-up. Divide total workflow cost by unique, correctly completed, policy-compliant tasks. Keep speculative recovered revenue separate from demonstrated cost savings.

Why is base salary not the full labour budget?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that benefits represented 30.0% of total private-industry compensation costs in June 2026. This broad measure is not specific to voice-AI engineers and should not be applied mechanically; it illustrates why advertised salary alone is incomplete. The percentage is a share of total compensation, not a 30% markup on salary. (bls.gov)

Use your own payroll, benefits, recruiting, equipment and management assumptions. Do not combine the highest San Francisco supplier salaries into a supposed minimum team cost for a small contractor.
